Palatinose is the trademark name for the sugar Isomaltulose. It is a sugar with a low glycemic index (GI32), which isn’t ideal for a sports drink that requires quick energy, but it’s perfect for a carb loader.

The main reason we chose Palatinose is that it is the first and so far only sugar to have the international stamp “Happy Tooth” awarded by Tooth Friendly International to products that do not negatively impact our teeth. Palatinose is not an effective quick carbohydrate source for sports drinks as it is absorbed 4-5 times more slowly than our carbohydrate sources in sports drinks and gels. Energy is thus delivered slowly to our muscles, which is not ideal during training and competition, but for carbohydrate loading that lasts 2-3 days before a competition, the speed of absorption doesn’t matter. Whether carbohydrates are stored as glycogen in the muscles in 10 minutes or 40-50 minutes doesn’t matter at all, and given that Palatinose is gentle on the teeth, we have chosen this for our U Loader.

Pro tip: Creatine Monohydrate in conjunction with carbohydrates has been shown to lead to 82% faster glycogen storage compared to carbohydrates alone over a 24-hour period. Therefore, we recommend purchasing additional creatine if you are in a last-minute rush and need to top up reserves. During normal loading over 2-3 days, the body has time to store the carbohydrates as glycogen in the muscles, and you don’t need to optimize with simultaneous creatine intake. But if you are in a last-minute rush and want to be optimal, it’s a tip.
